Curious weasel! It’s a summer of mustelids for me as I am seeing many of them on my hikes. I have not seen so many pine martens before, and occasionally I also come across long-tailed- and short-tailed weasels. None of them ever sit still however, and in dark dense forests it’s hella difficult to snap some good photos. The weasel in this photo actually came pretty close as me and some friends were sitting next to some logs.

Great gray owl couple!! Almost two months ago I found two great gray owls in a densely forested area in Yellowstone. I thought they would be good for a great summer, but about a week after this, they had completely vanished. I set so many steps in every direction after that, but no luck in finding them again. Spring and Fall normally have been great for me for these magnificent birds, and as Spring was taken away, I’m looking forward to what Fall will provide! This image obviously is extremely cropped for anyone wondering.

Wolf crossing! Late July I had two gray colored wolves cross the road in front of me, just as the sun was rising over the hills. They came out of thick timber and made their crossing at a calm pace. Some ten minutes later they crossed again, back to the other side. It all lasted seconds, but I was able to manage to take some photos from my car. Yellowstone is always full of surprises!

The comet Neowise. Some friends asked me if I phot

The comet Neowise. Some friends asked me if I photographed the widely visible comet called Neowise some weeks ago. I answered negative, and didn’t think it was such a big deal, nor an appealing sight to look at. But, I was wrong. I went out and observed the comet from Hayden Valley, and slowly moved myself towards Yellowstone Lake and was switching between taking photos of the Milky Way, and this comet. The comet’s orbital period is 6776 years, so it’s not happening frequently, and thus I was happy I had my friends convince me to go out to see it!

Grizzly cub feeling cute! Some three weeks ago I saw this cub of the year playing hide and seek behind deadfall, and eventually observing the crowd that was forming. It was yawning and cleaning itself mostly and giving some cute looks, which were welcomed with many “awww’s”. All baby animals in Yellowstone are growing so fast, and with merely a blink of an eye their appearances change. A big perk of having Yellowstone as a backyard is to witness change first hand, season by season. When Fall comes this cute coy will be even bigger, and then hopefully next Spring it’ll reappear as strong.

Young bull elk in flowers. It’s been a while since I have posted. Besides having some technical difficulties with my photo library, I have been keeping quite busy this summer. Yellowstone has been quite crowded and this is normally a time for me to not go in so much. However, I do make trips into the park, and mostly do hikes away from the roads. I’ve been bushwhacking, climbing over logs, falling, crawling, and all the time accompanied by a billion mosquitoes. It’s still great to go out and about though.  I photographed this young bull elk in velvet a little over a year ago on the Blacktail Plateau.

A pine marten baby!!! I got extremely lucky on a hike the previous weekend, when I found a family of American martens: one adult and three kits. As I was bushwhacking through dense forest, surrounded by a billion biting mosquitoes, I suddenly heard a noise I had not heard before. Hoping it was some kind of baby owl I climbed up a little hill, mostly over fallen deadwood. I didn’t hear the sound anymore at that point, so I sat myself down on a log and caught my breath again. While sitting there looking around suddenly I see a creature in a tree. It took me a moment before I realized I was looking at a pine marten! I was so excited for that one animal, but not much later I see a second, and third, and a fourth! Four pine martens in one tree! There was barely any light coming through the forest so taking photos was very hard. Then, they all seemed to fall asleep and once again I sat myself on a log, dozing off a little myself. Some hour later the adult had rallied the young ones and started to carry them out of the tree! I sat silently hoping for a better photo opportunity, but soon I was amidst of some marten chaos, when first the adult fell down with one kit, some 20 feet! Then the adult started to transport the babies to another tree one by one, location to location. The second kit however, was placed right under the log I was sitting on! Slowly I tried to move away, and then the baby peeked up from the log and I could take some photos. Wow. A.baby.pine.marten!

Northern saw-whet owlet!! Firstly, this photo was not taken in Yellowstone National Park, but somewhere in Montana. Secondly, I was over my head delighted to find this small owl! It had been one of my goals this Spring, but as time was progressing I wasn’t very hopeful. As the park was still closed and the state opened I started venturing out more often and explore other areas, mostly in search of owls. I found a great variety: great horned owl, short-eared owl, long-eared owl, Western screech owl, and on a search further away from home even my first ever flammulated owl. However, my goal for the Spring had been a baby saw-whet owl, and one on of my trips I got extremely lucky by finding this one. I even found it three days in a row! It was camouflaged so well, that I still wonder how I ever found them (two at one point!), but my mission was successful and I was extremely happy. This is a photo of the first evening. .

Bighorn ram keeping watch. I took this photo mid-March, on an overcast day. The ram came on a steep cliff in Yellowstone’s Confluence area. It stood there for a while, and then went back to grazing. A snow storm rolled in, but it didn’t stop the ram from foraging. .

Badger gone wild. One of my most epic wildlife encounters last Fall, when this badger showed some intimidation skills. I was observing two bald eagles being noisy, when this badger came out of a hole. I was quite far away, but then as I slowly turned my camera towards the animal, it started to jump around, and put its teeth in a piece of wood. It seemed that the piece of wood then got stuck around its teeth and it made the animal jump around. The badger just got rid of the wood seconds prior to this, and it kept doing cool moves. When it was done, it looked around, and then walked straight to me, passed me, and started digging some new holes, seemingly oblivious to my presence. Sadly most photos turned out unsharp, as I actually had no clue how to handle my new gear at that point… Oops.

Short-eared owl portrait. As Yellowstone keeps being closed, Montana lifted some restrictions on travel within the state, so I went on a car camp trip to try find some wildlife. I lucked out and came across a few short-eared owls, and managed to get this cooperative owl. The blue in the background are mountains, and the image is heavily cropped. I had a blast trying to photograph them, but also look forward to try find owls again in Yellowstone. .

My good friend @thomasajspur has a home with a view, and standing on his deck you could see the clouds swiftly coming over the mountain range, and the last rays of sun lighting the peaks up. .

Plowing bear! The park is still closed due to the pandemic, and encounters like the one I had with this bear in 2018 are being missed. It was an epic day when this bear came cruising through. The snow on the East side of the road wouldn’t hold the big boar, so it would sink in quite deep. Seemingly effortless he then made it to the river and swam to the other side. Bears can be unstoppable!

Frosty bison. Winter is slowly losing its grip, but in and around Yellowstone snow still can fall, like it did yesterday. On one of my tours in February I was able to snap this photo of a bull bison. I had slid down a hill side and later was barely able to get up again. It was frrreezing, and I might have frozen there for a second. Of course I had forgotten to wear gloves, so my fingers got slightly purple, but nothing too serious. As many people and animals long for Spring, I never can get enough of winter in Yellowstone, and I’m up for some summer snow fall!

One of my most epic days, sometime ago. Sometimes people ask me what my favorite photo is, or maybe plural, what are my favorite photos. For me, it’s one of the toughest questions, as many of my photos are personal, and the story behind it, is mostly more important than the quality or whether it’s “liked”, or maybe even sold. In these days of pandemic I’ve been browsing my image library thoroughly, and I ask myself: why do I keep so many bad quality photos? The answer is simple, they all have a meaning to me, as they all tell a moment of my times in Yellowstone and in many other places. The photo of these two (!) weasels represents one of my highlights in wildlife observations, as it was so rare, so unique, and shared with one of the best friends I made in my time in Yellowstone. It was blowing cold this particular day and like many winter days I spent my time in search of one of my favorite animals: the ermine. While me and my friend were talking and waiting, and waiting, suddenly out of the white surface a weasel came out, and seconds later a second. Our adrenaline went through the roof and I tried as best as I could to capture the moment. My personal favorites I shared a long time ago, but I surfaced this image of this day to share today. .

Northern saw-whet owl! I’ve been extremely owl focused since early 2019, and this little owl is one of the rarer finds in Yellowstone. I have done quite a few night surveys in the park prior closure, and now continue doing that outside Yellowstone’s borders. There’s something magical about being under the stars listening to owls hoot.

Who’s boss? The most dominant wolf I have seen over my years in Yellowstone National Park is by far the white female of the Wapiti Lake pack. In this photo she snaps at the pack’s dominant male, collared as 1015M. I took the photo in November 2018, when the pack had killed a bison cow and calf. Wolf 1015M shortly after joined the 8 Mile pack, and 1014M took the dominant position in the Wapiti Lake pack.

Grizzly bear cruising. I took this photo in April 2019. It was the first day I saw a grizzly up close that year, and it would be a bear I would see frequently in 2019. I wonder if he will roam the same big area in 2020 again. The bear later swam the Yellowstone river, and then crossed the road again to head further East.

A moose crossing. This is a photo from last November, when two big bull moose came through a large meadow to cross the road. It was a cold morning, and you can see this big bull’s breath. It was already later in the morning, and with a few steps the moose disappeared into the thick trees. .

Otter chills! This otter was ready for the weekend. It came out of the water and was grooming itself and then would just playfully lay down for a while. Otters are so cute! And one of the best hunters in Yellowstone. There’s a lot of open water currently, so hard to come by lately, but always such a delight to see them when you do..

Surprise sighting! I was beyond thrilled when my friend @taylorthomasalbright said he had seen a big owl earlier in the day. I suspected it to be a great horned owl, but when he showed me the photo my heart started racing: the magnificent great gray owl! I went to try find it, and eventually got lucky and was able to take some photos, including this one.

Coyote’s yawn. I was locked in the park yesterday, and of course, didn’t think that was a bad thing at all. The snow fall was absurd, and my windshield wipers at times could not hold up. They closed to road from Tower to Mammoth, and thus me and a handful of cars were at it by ourselves.
It was a slow day for wildlife, but I saw quite some horned larks flying and landing, and as most mammals were in hiding, I decided to lay on the side of the road hoping they would land where I could photograph them. The freezing temperatures made the minutes count, and no larks would ever land at a photographable distance. Just as I was about to cross over the road back to my car, this coyote came over the snow bank, shortly after followed by another one. I kept laying quiet and took some photos. The coyotes obviously had been sleeping. Shortly after they crossed the road and laid themselves next to some bison and enjoyed the sun that suddenly had broken through the clouds. .

The band (of trees). Since my friend David told me about his favorite tree in the park, I have always stopped with my clients to take some photos of it. I then tell them I call it’s “David’s Tree”. This then leads to online ‘arguments’, as other people like that tree a lot too. I can’t blame them, because it is a nice standing tree. Like a dancer, or the lead singer of a band. Who else has a favorite tree in Yellowstone?

Wakey wakey! I took this photo late April 2019. Lamar Valley was desolate, and the snow was falling heavily. A sow and a cub were foraging on the hills, and whenever visibility let me, I would watch them. Sitting in my car, looking at my phone, as the snow storm intensified. Then, the weather turned for the better, and I did not see the bears anymore. I pick up my binoculars, scout the hills, but can’t spot hem again. I blink with eyes, once, twice, and suddenly the two bears show up coming towards the road. I open my window, and manage to take some photos. The snow on this cub’s ears shows the weather before, and even in the background you can see some snowflakes falling. Low light, and heavily cropped.
Yellowstone’s Park Service reported that on March 7th the first grizzly bear of 2020 was seen wandering around, so soon we might see these majestic creatures roam the landscape again!

Run, run, run! Pronghorns are the fastest land animal in the United States, and the second fastest land animal in the world, after the cheetah. As there’s no cheetahs in the USA, a healthy pronghorn doesn’t really have to worry too much. However, as soon as injuries occur, they are fair game. I have seen coyotes try on pronghorn, I have seen bears try them, and also wolves go after them. Baby pronghorn are extra vulnerable, and they are hidden in the bushes while the adults graze, so it can happen a predator stumbles upon them… The pronghorn in this photo was on an afternoon jog, and just catching up with some others.
